Motorization and Wi-Fi are not the same feature. A shade motor may communicate directly with a handheld remote or wall control using its own radio system, while an app or voice assistant reaches that motor through a separate bridge connected to the home's network.
That architecture often allows basic local operation to continue during an internet outage, but it should never be assumed. The motor, remote, bridge, schedule storage, account, and smart-home platform all need to be confirmed as one system.
Start with the local control path
Ask the designer to demonstrate how the shades operate if the phone is unavailable. A labeled handheld remote or wall control should cover the household's essential privacy and access needs. Record which groups and favorite positions are stored in that control.
Understand which features may need the network or internet
- App control while connected to the home network
- Control from outside the home
- Voice-assistant commands
- Account login and device setup
- Automations shared through another smart-home platform
- Software updates, notifications, or cloud-based schedules
Some schedules run locally on a bridge even when outside internet service is unavailable; others rely more heavily on a cloud service. Ask where each important automation is stored and what happens after the router or bridge restarts.
Plan for router and password changes
Replacing a router, changing the Wi-Fi name or password, or moving bridge equipment can interrupt connected features even though the motors and remotes remain functional. Label the bridge and power supply, keep account ownership with the homeowner, and save the supported reconnection instructions.
Choose only the connectivity the household values
A remote-only system can be the right answer for a homeowner who wants simple dependable movement. Connected control adds real value for schedules, travel, accessibility, and whole-home scenes, but it also adds equipment, accounts, network dependencies, and a future support path that should be understood before purchase.
