A power outage does not affect every motorized shade in the same way. Rechargeable or replaceable-battery motors may still have operating power, while plug-in and hardwired motors normally depend on the home's electrical system unless compatible backup power is part of the design.
Controls add another layer. A handheld remote may communicate locally even when the internet is unavailable. An app, voice assistant, bridge, router, or whole-home system may lose some or all connected features. The exact fallback should be tested for the selected equipment.
Identify the windows that matter during an outage
Prioritize bedroom privacy, street-facing glass, doors, rooms used by people with limited mobility, and shades that affect safe movement through the home. Not every window needs the same backup plan.
Confirm the behavior of each power type
- Rechargeable or battery-powered motors may continue until their stored charge is depleted
- Plug-in motors generally need an energized receptacle
- Hardwired motors generally depend on the circuit and power supply serving them
- A generator or home battery does not help unless the shade circuit and control equipment are included
- Bridges, routers, keypads, and automation processors may have separate power requirements

Do not assume the shade can be moved by hand
Some motorized products have approved manual or override features; many do not. Pulling a shade that is not designed for manual operation can damage fabric, limits, or drive components. Ask for the exact outage procedure and keep it with the home records.
Check the system after power returns
Use the normal control to operate one shade or group and confirm limits, schedules, bridge status, and time settings. Avoid resetting devices simply because they do not reconnect immediately. Follow the documented restart order or contact the installer if movement or programming changed.
Build a simple outage plan
Keep local remotes in known locations, label critical groups, maintain rechargeable shades, and document which equipment depends on household backup power. For new construction or a whole-home system, include shade power supplies and controls in the electrical backup conversation early.
